Dr. Frances Donaldson, the 2023 Senior Australian of the Year for Tasmania, began her nursing career at the Royal Hobart Hospital in 1959.
“My family were not wealthy and as there was no medical faculty at the University of Tasmania, I chose to undertake a career in nursing.”
While nursing in Tasmania and Victoria, Fran rose to the level of Director of Nursing. “This position took me away from the patient’s bedside - so I decided to study Medicine”.
Fran was accepted by the University of Tasmania in 1977 and in 1982 was the first nurse in Tasmania to graduate. In her final year she was awarded the prize in General Practice.

Since then, Fran has worked in General Practice, Drug and Alcohol Medicine and Correctional Health. Ever since 2019 she has been employed by the Royal Hobart Hospital working as a Specialist Medical Practitioner in THE COVID @ HOME PLUS programme.
Fran has been a client of UNICA Wealth since 2009 and believes that working with them has had a significant impact on her life and well-being.
“I just wanted to have someone look after my money and guide me. What Dominic does for me is look after my super and give good investment advice and he’s done very well. He is also like a mentor to me. He is a mate and a confidant.
He gives me good advice about all sorts of things. I respect him and I hope I die before he does because I would be lost without him. He’s always in the background just looking after me.

Fran is a client of Dominic Mulcahy, Managing Director of UNICA Wealth, however like all Dominic’s clients, their relationship is so much more than investments and super funds. It’s about planning for life that hasn’t happened yet, with the portfolios and strategies a means to an end – with the end being that Dominic makes his client's lives easier.
"It has been my privilege to have the opportunity to form a deep and genuine connection with Fran over the years and to have her trust without reservation,” says Dominic.
Fran is an open and clear communicator, allowing our conversations to rarely revolve just around the numbers; they delve deeper, focusing on who she is as a person and what truly matters most to her. Fran is more than a client – she's a cherished friend.

When asked what advice Fran would give young people starting their careers she replied:
“Go see someone, and make sure they know what they are talking about, not someone shonky. One of my friends, a nurse at the prison, has some money and doesn’t know what to do with it. I said seek advice! You won’t cope without it, especially in these tight financial times.
“Everyone could do with financial advice, sometimes people with less money actually need more help than those who have more - but they don’t understand it. Find someone who does understand it. They make you feel safe. I couldn’t manage my money myself. I wouldn’t know what to do. My brain is about my job, and I would hate to think what would happen to my money if I had to organise it.”
